Watersheds Need Your Help!
14 Nov 2006
Spokane County is known for its superior outdoor environment. We depend on its lakes, rivers, and streams to provide recreation, wildlife, fish, drinking water, and water for our crops. Without it, our environment and economy suffers.

Unfortunately, Spokane County has several lakes, rivers, and streams that have impaired water quality. The loss of streamside buffers has been identified as one of the major problems.

We need your help to reverse this growing trend. The establishment of a buffer is truly one of the best things you can do to protect the water resources and your farm values.

We need you to help protect Spokane County and demonstrate your commitment to conservation!

Following is a list of program available to assist you in protecting Spokane County's waterways and demonstrating your commitment to conservation:

Spokane County Buffer Initiative Program
This program is designed to provide Spokane County residents up to 75% cost-share assistance on streamside projects. Projects may include fencing, tree and shrub planting, off creek watering, and others.

Continuous Conservation Reserve Program
This is a federally funded program that offers cost-share and incentives to establish various types of buffers. It also offers an attractive annual rental payment for the easement placed on the property.

Forestry Riparian Easement Program
This program allows landowners to place a long-term easement on qualified forested riparian areas. Landowners will receive a minimum of 50 percent of the fair market stumpage value for the qualifying timber.

To learn more about any of these programs, contact the Spokane Conservation District at (509) 535-7274.
